Introduction to Trove for Teachers

In this session we'll be talking specifically about Trove for teachers. We'll be looking at instructional resources, lesson planning, features, eText test banks, and other great features and resources that are available. We're gonna start with a quick overview of what Trove is and then we will work through the main features available for teachers.

If you have used BJU press materials at all, you know that digital resources are not new to BJU Press. We've had eTexts available, we have even had some interactivity with our techs. We've had teacher resources in digital format, we have had an assessment builder. We've also had a professional development site and even a teacher community where you can share ideas. Those are all great resources, but we have known for quite some time that we needed a one stop spot for everything BJU press. So for the past year and a half, two years, we have been working diligently at developing that one place, our new learning experience platform trove, which brings everything into one place. We brought all of our resources into one place and then have built on the best of all of our previous technologies to bring a whole new experience and one that connects teachers and students for the first time.

That's trove our true learning experience platform. Now, some of you may be saying why Trove? Where did you come up with that? Well, we looked for a word that would capture the idea of a place to go for anything incredible, incredible helps, incredible resources. Everything you would need to go with your BJU press materials for your class. The word trove has that meaning it's a valuable collection, a treasure, or a place where that treasure can be found. So we found that in Trove and we hope you'll find that as well.

The Structure of Trove: Teacher vs. Student Sides

Now, I mentioned there are two parts to Trove, so let me explain that just a bit further because it's really important to understand the structure of Trove. Here are two parts. First, we have our teacher side and our student side. And notice they are in no way connected. They are very separate in Trove. We're gonna talk about that connection in just a minute.

The Teacher Bundle: What's Included?

Let's talk about the teacher side first. This is what we call the teacher bundle, or if you look in the catalog, it would be called an annual school site license for teachers. When you purchase that for your school, all of your teachers, all of your faculty staff can have an account in Trove. And this is really important because whether you have two teachers or 500 teachers, everyone can have access under that license.

What do you get in that? So teachers will get all of the instructional resources for the courses that are assigned to them. So this is your PowerPoints, these are your images, your overviews, your games, your videos, your assessments. All of that is included in the teacher bundle. In addition, teachers also get a copy, a digital copy of every book that goes with those courses. So of course you get your E-TE, your teacher edition, an E student edition, and then many classes have activity manuals, lab manuals. You would also get digital copies of those as well in your teacher bundle. Now those copies of those books cannot be shared with students. They're not for student use, they're just for teacher reference. In addition, you'll also get any test banks that are available for the courses that have been assigned to you.

The Student Connection: How It's Activated

Now let's look at the student connection side. The student side is completely tied to the digital products for students. So these would include eTextbooks E assessments, e activity manuals, e lab manuals, anything like that. When you purchase one of those items for your students, automatically get that connection in Trove. You do not have to go buy a student license and then go buy your eText. You get that all in one whenever you buy a digital product for a student.

So let's say I buy a student edition for my class of students. And remember this is one per student. Those student editions drop into the student accounts in Trove. Now I do want you to notice something when I received a student edition here for my students, my teachers received something as well. Those are all of the questions from this book. All of those questions are available digitally and individually here for teachers on their side. So teachers can then say, we can look at the book as a student, but I'm going to push out an assessment to you. So instead of using paper and pencil, they could actually complete any of the questions from that book digitally.

Now when you purchase either a student edition, an activity manual, a lab manual, or e assessments in a digital format for your students, that is what opens that channel for your students. So now you can see I have an open channel or a hallway here between my teachers and my students. That is the key. The key is to get a digital item for your students and open up that hallway. Once you do that, then you can also share things like digital resources.

Getting Started: Login and Teacher Dashboard

Alright, so let's start out with our login screen. www.bjpresstrove.com. So you could, even if you use the student side, you can easily make this a bookmark. You can hang it up as a QR code. Lots of different options for teachers. This is where they come no matter what device, no matter where they are, as long as they have internet activity, internet connection, this is where they go to get all of their trove activities. And I also wanted to point out that there is a true single sign on um, opportunity here. So if you use Class Link or Google Classroom, you can also sign in there with those credentials on the trove sign in screen.

Alright, as we get into the trove account for teachers, I wanna take a close look at the teacher dashboard. So this is the homepage, this is what teachers see when they log in. I want to zoom in a little bit to the menu on the left because this is really where you will live as a teacher.

The Teacher Library & Finding Resources

Alright, let's look at the teacher library. This is where you're gonna find all the instructional resources that correspond to your BJU press materials and the ones that have been assigned to you by your administrator.

Now we have over 40,000 different teacher resources available. Of course not all those will be assigned to you, but there are a lot. And you can see here we use colorful icons to be able to help you quickly identify the type of resource.

So now let's go back to the library and talk about how do you find what you need when you come in here and there's so many resources... We've now tagged all of our resources so they all have metadata attached so you can search for them. There's a search box there at the top, type in whatever part of the name you can remember and it will find it for you. Another way you can find your resources is by using the filter feature. It's one of my favorites. You can filter by resource type subject area or by grade or combination of the three.

Resource Type Icons Explained

Let's talk about what each of these represent.
Additional Resources (+ sign): Miscellaneous items like fillable PDFs, extra practice pages, study tips, or handwriting resources.
Answer Keys (Checkmark): Keys for reading checks, instructional aids, quizzes, etc.
Assessments (Checklist): Represents assessment files or digital assessments.
Audio/Video (Play button): BJU Press-created materials like video segments or songs.
External Links (Link icon): Links to non-BJU Press online materials like articles or news reports that support lessons.
Games and Enrichment (Game piece): Includes things like Math 30 or Excel spreadsheets formatted for import into review game platforms like Kahoot.
eText (Book with gears): Teacher-only copies of Teacher Editions (TE), Student Editions (SE), or Activity Manuals (ACT). Not for sharing with students.
Instructional Aids (Wrench): Visuals, graphic organizers, and activities that accompany lessons.
Artwork (Mountain picture): Artwork from textbooks that can be used for bulletin boards, handouts, or assessments.
Be Cyber Smart (Shield): Mini-lessons on digital citizenship integrated with ELA subjects, including PowerPoints, lesson plans, and parent letters.
Overviews (Binoculars): High-level documents like Lesson Plan Overviews (editable Word documents) and curriculum maps.
Visuals/Charts (Bar chart): Graphs, timelines, or science visuals like volcanoes or a cross-section of the earth.
PowerPoints (P icon): Presentation files that can be used directly in Trove without downloading.
Maps (Globe): Represents the many maps available as resources.

Using and Interacting with Resources

You can preview them without downloading. You don't have to download, you don't have to convert. All you have to do is click for things like PDFs and images. When you click, you can actually interact with them. I could highlight, I could add text, shapes, images, a lot of different things. If I click on a PowerPoint, once again you can see it opens right here. All I have to do is click on the screen to move through those different animations.

You're also gonna find digital copies of your teacher edition student editions, activity manuals, lab manuals, et cetera... So we have an interactive dynamic table contents. I can place highlights... Same thing with notes. Highlighting is very standard click and drag to highlight. But I want you to notice that when I did that highlighting I also got three other options. I could listen to it be read, I could look it up in a dictionary or I could translate it into one of 29 different languages.

As I mentioned, the e activity manuals are also available. We know that everyone uses these manuals in a different way... But we have regardless we've heard over and over, we'd love to be able to project these. So now you can.

Lesson Planning with Playlists

Now we are still in our library and to assist with lesson planning, we have created the playlist feature. This is again for lesson planning. The idea behind this feature is that a teacher should be able to create a collection of lesson resources and when it comes time for the lesson, the teacher doesn't have to go open all these tabs or flash drives or open up downloaded items. Everything is one in one spot ready to share.

So I'm gonna navigate over to the left hand side onto the library area and I'm going to click playlist. Then I'm going to select to create a new playlist and I'm going to give my playlist a very specific name. Once I've given it a name, I'm gonna use the same exact filters that I'm used to from the library. As I choose them I'm just gonna place a little check mark in that box. I can go to add custom content and add in my own resources that I have made or have found elsewhere. I can click and drag to put these resources in the exact order that I want to present them in class.

I can share my playlist... So Greg shared this with me. He made a playlist and said Hey, you might wanna use this now I could use it as is, just click launch and go. But as you saw there, I can click that little, the three little dots... and when it expands it allows me to create a copy. Once I create my own copy, I'm gonna give it my own name and then I can modify it in any way I want.

Managing Custom Content (My Uploads)

We've also created a custom content library because we know as you find different resources, you might just wanna store them here in Trove so you can get at them easily. These could be files or links. So click my uploads on the left hand side, I can click new, I can add a folder, but I'm gonna add a file. So here I can drop it in or I can navigate to that file and click open. I can change the title, I can change, change the thumbnail. But regardless, there it is stored in my library.

The Assessment Builder: An Overview

Alright, let's transition out of the library and talk about assessment. So we're gonna talk about the assessment builder. Now assessment is a really broad term here. I'm talking about homework, quizzes, tests, projects, anything can be an assessment. We are so excited about the trove assessment builder. This is where you can create your own custom build assessments. Now there are three ways to do that. First from scratch we have 19 question types. Um, you can also build assessments from our question bank or test banks. And the third way is from publisher created materials. Now these are the actual questions out of books.

Now there are 19 question types. Some work only in a digital format, others work fine to print. Let's look at the ones that work well in a print environment.
Single Choice / Multiple Choice: Standard multiple-choice questions.
Ordering: Sequencing items.
